It ’s not for the money, so there has to be a good reason why four, otherwise sane and productive individuals with grown-up responsibilities and jobs decided to devote a good portion of their free time to starting a website dedicated to a game that many in the U.S. badmouth even as they drive their progeny to a Saturday morning rec. league game.
So, why the beautiful game?
For me, like most suburban youngsters in America, it began in early elementary school. When I was 11 I went absolutely nuts for the ’94 World Cup, I was so excited that it was in America.
It was a particulary hot summer which was the perfect excuse for me to sit inside and watch soccer. I don’t remember much about the actual tournament, well except for these beauties, and the fact that I wanted the US to win it all.
Gradually I drifted away from the sport and became interested in other things. I wasn’t very good at the game as a youngster I was too slow and clumsy.
But I slowly came back into the game, and got back into it full on in early 2006, and its gone downhill from there.
I’m fully addicted and its overcome every sport to take the top spot as my favorite sport. When my team loses it sucks more than when any of my teams from other sports lose.
I’ve also been getting back into playing and am looking to join an indoor league in the near future. We’ll see how that goes.
As for the “full-disclosure”
International: I support the United States, and to a lesser extent Scotland and Germany.
I’m from the US obviously so I’ll support them to the end.
My roots are in Scotland and Germany, though on both sides it goes back to when my great-grandparents were about my age, so there’s never been the hardcore national pride for either one, but I use them both as rooting interest during international competition the US isn’t in.
Club: Arsenal and Colorado Rapids
Read here to see how exactly I became an Arsenal fan.
I started following the Rapids in a more natural progression, I’ve always lived in Colorado so its just more natural. Plus nothings better than getting to a Rapids game early, cracking some beers, firing up a grill, and kicking a ball around for a little bit before the game. Someone mentioned in our roundtable that the MLS should switch to a European schedule, but I’d hate it for the fact that I’d miss out on that right there.
Odds and Ends: If I’m not supporting one of the above, I’ll still just enjoy watching the game.
If nothing good’s on TV I’ll watch FSC.
I hope you enjoy what we’re doing here, because I’ve enjoyed it so far.
